Team Format and Guidelines
Prepared by: Ben Burgstone (Captain)
Date: May 2025
I. Purpose
This document outlines the official team structure for the Redwood Fencing Team in connection with its participation in the Marin Fencing League. It defines leadership roles, match team composition, and membership tiers to ensure transparency and fairness.
II. Team Structure
1. Core Team Members
The competitive team fielded at each League event will consist of three fencers designated as Core Members. These fencers are selected based on performance, attendance, attitude, and readiness for competition.
Core members represent the team in official matches.
Core positions may rotate throughout the season based on eligibility and coaching discretion.
2. Team Captain
The captain is a student leader appointed to a two-year term. The school’s league liaison is automatically the captain as well. The captain is responsible for:
Representing the team to event organizers and school staff
Supporting new members and helping organize team communications
Assisting with conflict resolution and upholding conduct expectations
The captain must be a student in good academic and behavioral standing.
3. Bench Members
All students who train with the team but are not currently designated as Core Members are considered Bench Members. There is no cap on the number of Bench Members.
Bench Members participate fully in practices and team events.
They may be elevated to Core Member status at any time.
This structure ensures broad access to fencing regardless of prior experience.
III. Eligibility Requirements
All participants must:
Maintain academic eligibility under their school guidelines
Adhere to team conduct expectations and USA Fencing codes
IV. Code of Conduct
All team members agree to:
Represent Redwood with integrity and respect
Attend practices and events punctually
Treat coaches, officials, teammates, and opponents respectfully
Comply with safety guidelines and equipment protocols
Violations may result in temporary suspension or removal from the team.
V. Amendments
This team format may be reviewed and adjusted at the end of each season, based on feedback from coaches, participants, and school liaisons.
